Garden City, N.Y. - The defense was the demise of the Adelphi University baseball team Wednesday in a 4-3 loss to Felician University in non-conference action at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.
Only two of the seven runs scored by the two teams throughout the game were earned.
With Adelphi leading 3-2 in the top of the eighth, Felician's Dauri Genao drew an eight-pitch walk and stole second with two outs to put the tying run in scoring position.
Senior pitcher
Steven Murphy, who was working on three sparkling innings in relief, induced a routine grounder that had Adelphi out of the inning with a clean throw.
Freshman third baseman
Albert Ramos aired the throw over
Michael Draskin's reach, thereby scoring Genao as the tying run in what became a 3-3 game.
Graduate pitcher
Coleton Reitan was summoned to get the last out of the eighth, but Felician first took the lead on an RBI single by Anthony Lamar.
As the sun began to set on the diamond, Felician's Derek Vonhorn pitched a perfect eighth and ninth to shut the door.
Four Panthers registered a hit in the loss, highlighted by
Jose Matos' 1-for-3 day with two runs scored. Matos also threw out a pair of basestealers on the day.
Adelphi now heads for the sunshine of Florida and the team's first Spring Break trip since 2020. The Panthers meet St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday (Mar. 10) at 1 p.m. on the campus of Barry University in Miami Shores.
