Baseball Erases Early Deficit to Upset #19 Molloy, 8-4

Garden City, N.Y. - In the opener of a three-game series Saturday, the Adelphi University baseball team rallied for an 8-4 come-from-behind victory against No. 19 Molloy University at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.

From the start, Molloy's Charlie Cucchiara looked every bit the part of being the reigning ECC Pitcher of the Year. He mowed through the Adelphi lineup the first four innings and faced only one over the minimum.

The Adelphi offense started to come to life in the fifth, when a two-out RBI single by Jack Wishner moved Anthony Cipri to third. Cipri, who went 3-for-4 on the day and led off the inning with a single, scored after Molloy's Jake McCarthy misplayed the cut-off throw.

As John Rizzo settled in after a four-run second, the Panthers went back to work again in the sixth. Rizzo only faced two over the minimum after the second and struck out the heart of the Molloy order in the fifth.

Adelphi came up with three RBI hits in its half of the sixth to level the score at 4-4. Tim Feliz sliced the deficit in half with an opposite-field RBI single, and Alec Maag smacked the game-tying two-out RBI double to left.

Jacob Pedersen got the win in the decision with some sensational relief. After taking over for Rizzo with two outs in the sixth, Pedersen retired the first five to face him and got a key strikeout of Molloy's Chris Giardino in the eighth to keep the score tied.

With momentum now in Adelphi's favor, Feliz lined a lead-off RBI double to start the home eighth. Needing a clutch hit with two outs, Wishner hit a hot-shot at the shortstop that bounced into the outfield for the eventual game-winning run.

In his first collegiate home game, Albert Ramos went the other way for a key two-RBI single on a 3-1 offering to provide the Panthers some needed insurance.

Rizzo finished with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings, while Pedersen tossed 2.1 scoreless. Coleton Reitan walked a pair but pitched a scoreless ninth.

The three-game series with Molloy concludes with a doubleheader at 11 a.m. at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field in Garden City.
