Waltham, Mass. - It was a Friday afternoon split for the no. 18 Adelphi University softball team, who took a game one narrow victory before falling by one in the second to Bentley University.
Game One: Adelphi 1, Bentley 0
Lindsey Hibbs secured her sixth shutout of the season on Friday morning, holding the Falcons to just three hits through seven innings. Along the way, she fanned 14 batters, en route to reaching a career milestone of 500 strikeouts, which ranks her fifth all-time in the Adelphi record books.
Scoring the lone run of the first game was
Jaden Farhat, who reached on a single to right field to be later driven in by Jordan Pasqueralli's single up the middle in the top of the fifth inning.
The Falcons left runners on base in four different innings, but were unable to push across any runs due to strong defense and Hibbs' performance in the circle.
Game Two: Bentley 5, Adelphi 4
After putting up a two-spot in the first inning of game two, the home team came back to cut the deficit to one after plating a run on an RBI double. The Panthers got their own double from
Angela Lignelli to lead off the second, who was eventually brought around on a sacrifice fly from Pasqueralli.
A scoreless bottom of the second with
Claire Fon in the circle made way for another run for the visitors in the next half inning, when
Kendall Winn recorded her second home run this season as a solo shot to start off the frame. With bases loaded, the Falcons worked their way out unscathed, but still trailing by two.
A three-run home run for Bentley's Jordan Krause quickly tied up the second game at four-all, concluding Fon's outing.
The Panthers had a chance to break open the contest when they loaded the bases in the fifth, but the home team managed to find a way out of the jam. Both sides remained scoreless over the ensuing two innings, however a solo shot for the Falcons from Kaylee Mankins to put them up 5-4 gave the hosts their eventual gamewinning run.
The visiting team saw a single from
Brianna Fischer but Payton Doiron retired the following two batters to seal the victory.
Adelphi will return to Janet L. Ficke Field this Sunday, April 2 when they host Georgian Court in doubleheader action. The team will promote mental health awareness through the Morgan's Message organization - Adelphi branded shirts will be available for purchase to support the organization and the efforts put forth by the athletic department as the community works together to destigmatize mental health problems among student-athletes.
