Garden City, N.Y. - Between
John Rizzo's complete-game two-hitter and a shortened-game offensive burst from the visitors, the Adelphi University baseball team split its doubleheader with the College of Saint Rose on Friday at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.
Game 1: Adelphi 11, Saint Rose 3
The Panthers got off to a quick start in the morning match-up, with
Kyle Olson's round-tripper over the right-field fence highlighting six unanswered runs through the first four innings.
Tim Feliz also knocked in two runs over that stretch with a pair of singles.
Rizzo starred as he took a no-hitter with just one baserunner into the sixth inning. Saint Rose's Jared Reed hit a deep double that bounced off the right-center field wall to break up the no-no. That was shortly followed by Tony Socci's three-run home run to cut the deficit in half.
Adelphi pulled away late in the last couple of innings.
Jack Wishner and
Cooper Johnson came through with back-to-back RBI hits in the seventh frame.
Alec Maag rounded out the scoring with a rare home run that popped out of the leftfielder's glove and bounced over the wall for a two-run dinger.
Rizzo not only flirted with a no-hitter, but pitched the first complete game of his collegiate career. He set a season-high with ten strikeouts and walked only two over nine full innings.
Game 2: Adelphi 4, Saint Rose 7
After a quick and scoreless opening two frames, the Golden Knights finally heated up. Sparked by a deep home run to left-center from Zephaniah Vaughn, the road team put up six unanswered runs between the third and fourth innings.
Despite falling into a deep hole, Adelphi cut the lead down to just 6-4 in the home fourth, due in part to a pair of doubles from
Michael Draskin and Wishner.
While the home team threatened again in the fifth by loading the bases, the relief pitching from Saint Rose was just too much for the Panthers.
The visitors' Nathan Toms and Matthew Tiberia pitched a combined three innings of no-hit ball, throwing fifty total pitches in the process to give the Golden Knights their first conference win of the season.
In relief,
Coleton Reitan pitched another scoreless inning for the 'Cats and has still yielded one run over his last 9.1 innings.
The Panthers wrap up their four-game set with Saint Rose on Sunday (Apr. 2), with another doubleheader from William J. Bonomo Memorial Field at noon.
