Garden City, N.Y. - The season series between Adelphi University and the College of Saint Rose concluded in an even split, after both teams prevailed Sunday in a doubleheader at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field in Garden City.
Game 1: Adelphi 14, Saint Rose 3
A couple of defensive mistakes cost Saint Rose the first runs of the game.
A shorthopped throw on a routine ground ball to third, followed by a misplayed fly ball, gave the Panthers two runners on with one out in the second.
L.J. Bohne then cashed in for Adelphi's first run with an RBI single to right center. The inning then began to unravel for Saint Rose starter Randall Alejo, who hit a pair of batters and gave up three unearned runs in the process.
As
Brendan Kenneally kept the Golden Knights at bay, the floodgates opened for the Adelphi bats in the home fifth. In sending eleven men to the plate,
Alex Rende's bases-clearing double busted the game open.
Johnny Catuosco,
Alec Maag and
Michael Draskin all tacked on RBIs in a seven-run inning, making it a 10-1 game.
Kenneally worked a stellar 5.1 innings and struck out five for his second-consecutive victory, while
Nick Gavilla cleaned up the last 1.2 frames in relief.
Game 2: Adelphi 10, Saint Rose 17
In the second game of the doubleheader, Saint Rose dealt Adelphi early blows that amounted to a commanding 15-0 advantage through three innings.
Although a pair of double plays interrupted rallies in the first and second innings, Adelphi put up an eight-spot in the third to get right back into it.
Bohne continued his strong afternoon with a two-out, two-RBI single to center. Six different players contributed RBI knocks in the frame.
As the Panthers marched towards a possible comeback,
Coleton Reitan worked a sixth scoreless outing with 3.1 scoreless frames and eight strikeouts.
Adelphi was only limited to two runs the rest of the way though by Saint Rose reliever Tom Cattaneo, who got the win after 5.0 innings of relief.
The 10-game homestand for the Panthers continues Tuesday (Apr. 4) with a 3:30 p.m. first pitch against Jefferson University in Garden City.
