Game Recap: Softball |

#18 Softball Walks Off Twice on Wilmington; 1-0, 3-2

Garden City, N.Y. - Not only was it a pair of one-run games, the No. 18 Adelphi University softball team thrillingly walked it off in the seventh twice against Wilmington University on Tuesday at Janet L. Ficke Field in Garden City.

In their first head-to-head meeting since last year's NCAA Super Regional tilt, the 'Cats won both games in exciting fashion and capped their ten-game homestand at 9-1, ultimately improving to a stellar 17-4 on the season.

Game 1: #18 Adelphi 1, Wilmington 0
Although only one run was scored, the Panthers stranded twelve total runners across the opening contest. On three separate occasions, Adelphi left the bases loaded.

More specifically, in the sixth, the Brown and Gold filled the bags with none out. The ball barely left the infield the following three at-bats, with Courtney Wengryn grounding out to second to end the inning.

In the meantime, Lindsey Hibbs controlled the game from the circle and kept Wilmington off the scoreboard. She struck out six and never issued a walk in a complete-game effort.

With Adelphi taking its turn at bat in the seventh, Alexa Sacripante led off the inning with her near-league-leading 11th double of the season. After Kendall Winn sacrificed her to third, Sabrina Morales lifted the game-winning sacrifice fly to deep center for the walk-off.

Game 2: #18 Adelphi 3, Wilmington 2
The Panthers had the offense going right from the jump. A lead-off triple by eventual hero Jordyn Pasqueralli set the tone for a two-run first. Zee Zee Shreter drove the freshman in the next at-bat with an RBI single, and Winn tacked on another later with a sacrifice fly.

With Claire Fon settling in the circle in Game 2, the Wildcats could barely get a ball to leave the infield the first three innings. It wasn't until the fourth, when Wilmington broke through for a hit that reached the outfield grass by Taylor Gillis.

In the fifth, Wilmington had its own bases-loaded threat. Winn made two sparkling defensive plays at third to force a run out at home, but a two-out opposite-field flare by Gillis leveled the game at 2-all.

Hibbs took the ball in relief of Fon and retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh, setting the stage for another potential walk-off win.

Wilmington's Haley Gunkel got the first two outs, before two fielding errors suddenly put the winning run for Adelphi in scoring position. On an 0-1 offering, Pasqueralli went the other way, dunking in the game-winning hit just over the shortstop's glove.

Head Coach Carla Campagna and the Panthers take to the road on Friday (Mar. 31) for a 3 p.m. first pitch at NE10 foe Bentley University in Waltham, Mass.
