Garden City, N.Y. - Another no-hitter from Lindsey Hibbs, coupled with the first collegiate home run for Brianna Fischer, cemented a sweep for the No. 16 Adelphi University softball team on Sunday against Southern New Hampshire University at Janet L. Ficke Field.
The home team took both games of the doubleheader by the scores of 6-0 and 4-1. Hibbs and Fon earned their eighth and sixth wins on the season, respectively.
Game 1: Adelphi 6, SNHU 0
The Panther offense took advantage of Hibbs' strong performance right away, scoring three runs in the first inning after Alexa Sacripante hit a long double off the left-field fence to break the ice.
Hibbs struck out eight of her first nine batters to keep Adelphi up by four runs after three innings of work.
After Sacripante knocked another runner home from second in the bottom of the third, Hibbs allowed her first of two baserunners of the afternoon in the top of the fourth, when her 3-2 pitch to SNHU's Peyton Feldman was called low. Sacripante then picked her off at first two pitches later.
Hibbs then continued to go to work, as she struck out five of her next six in the following two innings that included her only other walk of the day.
After some insurance runs came home for the Panthers in the fifth, Hibbs finished off her third no-hitter of 2023 with three flyouts in the seventh. Hibbs finished with 14 strikeouts and improved to 8-2 on the season.
Game 2: Adelphi 4, SNHU 1
On the strength of a two-RBI hit from Angela Lignelli and Claire Fon's complete game, the Panthers took down SNHU in the nightcap.
After Fon netted all four of her strikeouts in the first two innings, the home team took advantage, as Lignelli's second-inning grounder up the middle drove home two.
The Penmen only managed two hits over the next three innings of play, while Fon kept a shutout through her sixth inning of work.
In the bottom half of the sixth, Adelphi found two more insurance runs, highlighted by a home run from Brianna Fischer that soared over the center-field fence. Courtney Wengryn knocked in another with a dribbler up the middle.
Fon lost her shutout in the seventh inning after SNHU's Ari Ferrier was driven home on a groundout following her triple. Fon completed the game to improve her record to 6-1 on the season.
The Adelphi softball team will return to action on Tuesday (Mar. 28), when it hosts Wilmington University in a doubleheader at Janet L. Ficke Field. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
