Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Kallansrude Nets OT Thriller to Defeat #17 Assumption, 10-9

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. -  Behind a transition goal from Kristina Kallansrude, the no. 9 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team bested no. 17 Assumption University on Saturday, resulting in a 10-9 overtime victory on Motamed Field.

In a game that was faced by the cold rain and winds on Long Island, the first 14 minutes of the game saw both teams scoreless until Assumption's Jenna Joseph broke the stalemate with her 14th tally of the season in the final minute.

The second frame saw a lot more scoring as each squad scored three goals, including a one quarter hat trick from Olivia Catanzarite. Adelphi's Kallansrude scored with just 3.3 seconds left in the half to cut the lead to one at the break.

Coming out of the halftime break was another winning period by Assumption, as they ended the third quarter with a 7-5 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of work.

The Greyhounds led by three goals with under four minutes to play before an offensive surge by the home team in the final minutes. A hat-trick score from Kallansrude put the hosts back by two, and a pair of goals from Danielle Marino, including the equalizer with just 38.7 seconds to play, forced overtime between these conference foes locked at nine-all.

A drama-filled start to the extra frame started with a foul on Nicolette Giordano, priming Catanzarite another free-position shot to add onto her already four-goal scoring tally. When the whistle blew, she fired a shot into the chest of Madison Marchetta - who logged her fifth, and biggest,  save of the afternoon to keep the game knotted at nine.

At the switch of sides in the opening overtime period, Caroline O'Connell forced a turnover on Kelly-Ann McGrath, and after a quick Assumption push, Kerrin Heuser returned the ball to Adelphi with a caused turnover of her own.

Kallansrude then scored her fourth goal of the day at the 1:46 mark assisted by Kelly-Ann McGrath to give the home team an exhilarating win over Assumption, by a final score of 10-9.

Adelphi returns to action when they travel to Pace University on Wednesday, Mar. 28. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
