Garden City, N.Y. - After trailing by four in the early going, the no. 9 Adelphi University women's lacrosse program came back to defeat the no. 20 New Haven Chargers, 9-5 on Wednesday, to earn their second consecutive Northeast-10 conference victory.
In what started as a defensive battle, New Haven finally broke the ice at the 3:30 mark of the first quarter which was the start of four unanswered goals to open the contest and put the Panthers in an early 4-0 deficit. The visitors' Raegan Bailey was responsible for the opening two scores, her second on a fast break transition goal that went straight past Madison Marchetta.
With five minutes to go in the half, the home team still found themselves scoreless until Kelly-Ann McGrath put the Panthers on the board, converting a free-position shot, followed by Rita Sefransky and Izzy Grant scoring less than a minute apart to go into the break down by one.
In the third frame, the home team came out firing on all cylinders. Scoring four unanswered courtesy of Kristina Schweitzer, Tamia Lawson, a second goal from Grant, and a free-position tally from Kerrin Heuser. They also outshot New Haven as a team 9-1, after holding a 4-1 edge in draw control victories in the quarter.
McGrath and Schweitzer each tacked on another for themselves in the fourth. The Panther's defense was on display in the latter half of the game. New Haven scored with under a minute to go in the game, which ended a 39:35 scoring drought for the Chargers.
The home team also caused 21 of the visitor's 26 turnovers for the game, while the other side caused 13 of Adelphi's 19. Marchetta ended with a single save in each of the last three frames, which was large in part to limited shot attempts by a defense that was anchored by four caused turnovers each from Nicolette Giordano and Tamia Lawson.
Adelphi will be back in action on Saturday, March 25 when they host Assumption University at 1:00 p.m. on Motamed Field.
