Garden City, N.Y. - Just ahead of the Northeast-10 Conference slate, the no. 9 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team opened its home slate with a 15-6 decision over RV Roberts Wesleyan Saturday afternoon, marking the team's second consecutive in-region victory.
The victory avenges the 2021 missed trip to the NCAA tournament, when the Redhawks (4-4) got their first program berth, after Bentley took down the Panthers in the conference tournament.
Izzy Grant finally got on the scoring train, finishing the afternoon with four points behind two goals and two assists. She and newcomer
Rita Sefransky combined for 11 draw control wins, which was instrumental in the win, as they doubled up their opponents success at X, 16-8.
It was an eight-goal scorer affair for the home team, as four different players each chipped in a pair.
In a matter of four minutes, the Panthers (2-2) offense got rolling as
Kristina Schweitzer got things going at 11:04, and Adelphi rattled off the next six scores, capped with
Jamie Mecca's third of the season. The Redhawks broke their silence at 2:35, but not before the hosts jumped out to a 7-1 lead. At the conclusion of the first quarter the home team had scored as many goals as they did in two of the first three games of the season.
Another four goals in the second put the game at running time, but Roberts Wesleyan managed to score a pair to make it an 11-3 contest.
Kelly-Ann McGrath's man-down tally was the last of the half for Adelphi, who still maintained an eight-goal advantage heading into the break.
With a nearly scoreless third quarter,
Madison Marchetta picked up four saves, only allowing a single goal from the Redhawk's leading scorer Annie Mulhall at 1:10. The visiting team came out to strike in the final period of regulation but the deficit was too great to overcome as Adelphi tacked on one more from Grant. RWC's Shawna Lesmerises finished with half of her saves in the last 15 minutes of work, ultimately ending with 10 for the contest.
Adelphi will play one more on the road before coming back to Motamed Field, when they trip up to Southern New Hampshire on Mar. 18 for their conference opener.
