Myrtle Beach, S.C. - Even despite rallying to tie the game in the ninth, the Adelphi University baseball team was the hard-luck loser Sunday in a 4-3 extra-inning loss to University of Bridgeport at Ebbets Field at the Ripken Experience.
The Adelphi bats started out flat again, until a ninth-inning rally stirred a comeback.
After
Tim Feliz was hit by a pitch to give the Panthers (1-3) a lead-off baserunner, Bridgeport (1-3) turned to experienced arm Tyler Solomon for the save opportunity.
In the following at-bat,
Michael Draskin took a 2-2 pitch down the left-field line that put the tying runs in scoring position. On the first pitch the next batter saw,
Anthony Cipri singled home both runs.
Albert Ramos sacrificed the winning run over to second with none out, but Cipri was left stranded and the game went to extra innings.
As the game reached the 11th,
Cullen SantaMaria made his debut for the Panthers, and plunked back-to-back batters.
Robert Affenita IIIÂ was then summoned, leading to a failed pickoff attempt that gave UB two runners in scoring position.
A Jeremy Rodrigues sacrifice fly would put the Purple Knights ahead, and prove to be the winning run.
Freshman pitcher and Long Island native Tyler John came on for Bridgeport in the bottom half of the inning, and retired the Panthers in order to end the game.
Junior pitcher
Jack Carr got the nod to make the start for Adelphi, and pitched five immaculate innings with three strikeouts. Three of the Panthers' five relief arms had scoreless outings on the day.
Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello and the Panthers now come home to commence a three-game weekend set with neighboring rival Molloy University. The series begins Friday (Mar. 3) at 2:30 p.m. at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex in Uniondale, N.Y.
