Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The first win is in the books for the Adelphi University baseball team, following a split of a doubleheader against the College of Staten Island at the Polo Grounds on Saturday night.
Each of the fields that make up the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach are designed off the dimensions of former Major League Baseball ballparks.
Game 1: Adelphi 0, Staten Island 4
The two starters didn't give up much of an inch in their respective outings.
Adelphi's
Jordan Falco let up a run on four hits with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work, while CSI's Ryan Kehoe managed seven innings of shutout ball.
The Panthers put a handful of runners on base against Kehoe, but were unable to push across the tying run in a then 1-0 game.
In need of some additional run support, CSI tagged
Jacob Pedersen for a pair and
Tommy O'Sullivan for a run, as well, to widen its lead in the ninth.
Alex Martinez entered into a save situation in the eighth, and nailed down the six outs needed, although Adelphi got the tying run to the plate in its final turn at-bat.
Game 2: Adelphi 8, Staten Island 6
In the nightcap, Adelphi capitalized on some poor defense by the opposition.
Albert Ramos, who twice reached on an error to start an inning, accounted for the tying runs in the second and fourth innings. Then, in the fifth,
Michael Draskin reached on a lead-off error, ultimately resulting in a pair of unearned runs that gave Adelphi a 6-3 lead.
Johnny Catuosco, who currently leads the team with a .400 average, tacked on another run in the sixth with a one-out RBI single to the opposite field.
In contrast to the opener, CSI twice brought the tying run to the plate in its final turn at-bat.
Robert Affenita III picked up a key strikeout and induced a pop-up in foul territory to end the game.
Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello and the Panthers wrap up their visit to Myrtle Beach tomorrow (Feb. 26) with a 12 noon first pitch against University of Bridgeport.
