Softball Resilient Again at UNC Pembroke Round Robin; 9-7, 6-5

Pembroke, N.C. - The Adelphi University softball team managed another incredible comeback Tuesday afternoon at the UNC Pembroke Round Robin Tournament.

Just as play on the field commenced, the Panthers found themselves at No. 11 in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 rankings.

Game 1: #11 Adelphi 9, UNC Pembroke 7
After both teams stranded a pair of runners in the first, UNC Pembroke broke through for a big inning in the second, when three runs came across against Adelphi starter Tierney Fitzgerald.

Despite entering the game trailing 3-0, Claire Fon was able to limit the damage in relief, leading the way for an Adelphi comeback.

Adelphi trailed 5-3, until another sixth-inning onslaught pushed the Brown and Gold in front. In Saturday's two Opening Day victories, the Panthers scored all but one of their six runs in the sixth inning.

Angela Lignelli, who doubled home two in the fourth to get Adelphi within 5-3, led off the rally with another double to center. Jordyn Pasqueralli then drove her around with an RBI single, before Courtney Wengryn crushed a go-ahead homer beyond the left-field fence.

The long ball didn't die there for Adelphi, which managed back-to-back homers following Wengryn's homer, courtesy of a long ball to deep center off the bat of Zee Zee Shreter.

Once the team batted around in the sixth, Shreter got another chance to tack on in the seventh and dumped a two-RBI triple down the right-field line to give Adelphi a more-comfortable 9-5 advantage.

Fitzgerald re-entered the game in the seventh in a save opportunity. With the tying run at the plate and two outs, she induced a routine grounder that allowed Farhat to tag the lead runner in a rundown between third and home.

Game 2: #11 Adelphi 5, Wingate 6
Adelphi twice had multiple-run leads against Wingate, which came into today's game receiving votes in the NFCA Top 25.

Right off the bat, Wengryn had the game's first plate appearance and went yard to stake Adelphi to the quick 1-0 lead. Later that inning, Kendall Winn lifted a sacrifice fly to center that gave the Panthers an early two-run cushion.

Wingate homered in back-to-back at-bats in the second to tie the game, but Adelphi fired right back. The Panthers soon led 5-2, by way of an Alexa Sacripante third-inning RBI double and a Shreter two-RBI single in the fourth.

The Bulldogs managed to get to Lindsey Hibbs again though. Even after recording two outs with a runner on second, Wingate strung together three consecutive RBI hits, including a game-tying RBI double by Hali Scott.

Then, in the seventh, Wingate drew two walks to load the bases, leaving it to Savanna Brooks to come through with a two-out RBI single against the Adelphi bullpen for the walk-off victory.

Head Coach Carla Campagna and the Panthers will play UNC Pembroke twice more tomorrow (Feb. 22) in a doubleheader, before traveling back to South Carolina. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
