Pleasantville, N.Y. - Seven points was all
Ronnie Silva needed to become the Adelphi University leading scorer, which he achieved on Wednesday in men's basketball's loss at Pace University, 72-77.
Silva's two three-pointers in the opening half saw him tie Richard Byrd's 12-year standing record at 2,013 but with the first basket coming out of the break, he shifted to the top of the list. Ultimately the graduate student - still only playing in four seasons due to covid - ended up scoring 19 points and still has one regular season game and playoffs to extend his mark on the program.
The Panthers (11-16, 5-14 NE10) drop their second straight contest and a narrow decision to the Setters, who improve to 17-9 this season with an even 9-9 mark in league play.
With the game locked at 11-11 in the early going, the home team put together an 11-0 run to quickly jump out to a 22-11 advantage. Adelphi managed to cut into their deficit, and capped an 8-0 run with an
Andrew Delaney fastbreak in the paint after a stretch of untimely turnovers on both sides.
Only down by five coming out of the locker room, the Panthers were dealt a class B technical before the break, which sent Setter's leading scorer Brandon Powell to the charity stripe where he knocked down both.
Adelphi took its first lead of the game at 14:01 when
Elijah Lewis poured in a three-pointer but the hosts responded with seven unanswered to keep their opponents at bay. The visiting team would not get closer than three for the remainder of the contest, despite chipping away at its deficit.
Silva led the team with 19 points followed by four-time NE10 Rookie of the Week
Dayshaun Walton who accounted for 17, and Lewis who was responsible for 13. Coming off the bench,
Matthew Price poured in 11 points with the help of three buckets from beyond the arc. For the contest, Pace shot just under 50 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Cats by 10 boards.
Men's hoops will break for the week and close out the regular season at home on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Prior to tip-off, the program and department of athletics will recognize the accomplishments of the graduating class, which includes leading scorer Silva and Zach Feingold.
