West Haven, Conn. - In its last conference game before the New Year, the Adelphi University women's basketball team rallied from an 11-point third-quarter deficit to knock off NE10 rival University of New Haven, 56-49, on Tuesday at Charger Gymnasium in West Haven.
Trailing 41-33 entering the fourth quarter, the Panthers (2-6, 2-3 NE10) executed a 23-8 run over the final ten-minute period to snap a four-game skid.
Adelphi opened the quarter with four consecutive buckets in a 37-second stint to surge into the lead -- the last three of which came in transition. Sophomore guard
Christina Sanchez forced a turnover in the backcourt and dropped in a lay-up with 9:14 left to put the 'Cats in front by a point at 42-41.
The 'Cats shot a game-high 55.6 percent from the field in the fourth quarter, making 10-of-18 field-goal attempts. Adelphi also limited New Haven (2-5, 0-5 NE10) to just one bucket in the first 5:33 of the final period of regulation.
Graduate forward
Jenna Jordan hit on three key field goals down the stretch to keep the Brown and Gold ahead.
Junior guard
Kaitlyn O'Connell, who dropped a career-high 18 points against the Chargers last winter, set a new lifetime-best -- coincidentally against the same opponent -- with 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting in the victory.
Jordan and junior guard
Rolanda Robinson each collected double-doubles. Jordan's consisted of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Robinson accomplished her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Head Coach
Sade Jackson and her Adelphi squad now have a week off before welcoming in College of Staten Island for a non-conference tilt next Tuesday (Dec. 12) at 5:30 p.m. at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
