Garden City, N.Y. - Looking to build on its recent winning streak, the Adelphi University women's basketball team took down University of the District of Columbia, 69-55, in a non-conference affair Monday afternoon at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
Now winners of three straight, the Panthers (4-6) were backed by a career-high 24-point outburst from
Rolanda Robinson, who handed the Firebirds (11-2) their second loss in as many games after receiving votes in last week's WBCA Division II Top 25 Poll.
Even with two foulouts and rolling just seven deep, Robinson exploded for a 5-for-11 afternoon from three and contributed eight rebounds and four assists in nearly a full 40 minutes of work.
A Robinson bucket with 4:10 left in the second quarter ended a drought of 2:30 and ignited a 13-0 run that surged the 'Cats out to a 35-21 advantage before the break.
Carmen Kweti spread the Adelphi lead to double digits in the final minutes of the first half with a put-back lay-up.
Christina Sanchez followed up that bucket with a three from the wing.
Trailing by twelve at the half, UDC closed the gap to a single possession in the third quarter. Two Destiny Ryles free throws had the visitors within 39-36 at the 6:33 mark.
It was Ryles' performance from the stripe though that was a difference in the contest. Despite those two makes, Ryles missed ten total foul shots in an 8-for-18 display at the line.
Robinson knocked down a couple of key treys in the third to keep the Panthers ahead, and
Kaitlyn O'Connell shut the door in the fourth with two threes of her own.
Graduate forward
Jenna Jordan counted another double-double toward her season total, totaling 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting and grabbing 10 rebounds off the glass. O'Connell filled up the stat sheet with eight points, seven rebounds and four assists. Kweti came down with nine boards off the bench.
