Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Dropped By Mercy, 68-66

Garden City, N.Y. - Coming down to the final inbound the Adelphi University women's basketball team was handed a tough loss, 68-66 from Mercy College on Saturday afternoon inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.

In an opening frame that went back and forth, Mercy managed a one-point advantage at the 3:10 mark when both teams turned stale for over two minutes. Jenna Jordan broke the silence with her first basket of the contest at 1:06 but unfortunately, the Mavericks got in the last word to be up one on the home team at the conclusion of the quarter.

Keeping it close in the early going, the visiting team pulled away over a minute into the second quarter, rattling off a 9-4 run over 2:28 to lead by six.  In that stretch, the Mavs were 3-3 from the field and perfect at the free throw line as Adelphi fell short with a 2-for-4 attempt at the charity stripe.

Closing out the second, the Panthers swung momentum in their favor, using an 8-2 run to cut the Mercy lead to one. Jordan put in five points while the visiting team team was held to two free throws over 2:03.

Seven straight points highlighted the Mavericks side of the scoreboard to start the third, but a trey by Isabella Asencio knotted the game at 39-all. Rolanda Robinson knocked down a shot from behind the arc of her own to regain the advantage, but Mercy was quick to respond. At the conclusion of the third quarter, Jordan put in a turn around jumper to cut the Maverick lead to three with a final 10 minutes of regulation to play.

Asencio pulled up for a bucket that tied the game once more and was followed by a Robinson steal which she turned into two to take a 56-54 lead with under five to play in the contest. A battle under the basket with an offensive board from Robinson and a basket from Jordan helped keep the Mavs at bay with under a minute and a five-point advantage.

Coming out of a Panther timeout, Mercy picked off an Adelphi inbound and drove to the basket to take a 67-66 lead and got a stop in the home team's offensive zone. The Mavericks committed 30 turnovers of which the Panthers were able to score 32 points, however an attempt at the buzzer did not fall, handing Adelphi its third loss of the year.

Head Coach Sade Jackson and her squad will be on the road for the next two games, starting with a Northeast-10 bout with Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, Nov. 21.
