Garden City, N.Y. - On Friday, the No. 14 and second-seeded Adelphi University women's soccer team took to its own turf for the 2023 NCAA Division II Championship, and prevailed 2-0 over No. 7 seed University of Bridgeport in first-round competition at Motamed Field.
Eleven of seventeen total results have now come via clean sheet this season for the Panthers (13-3-4) -- the most for the program since 2015.
Adelphi will now enter into a second-round showdown on Sunday (Nov. 19) with No. 6 seed Molloy University -- which took its first-round tilt with Jefferson University by a 1-0 final.
Molloy has failed to allow a goal in each of its last seven outings, but dropped a 1-0 decision to Adelphi in its regular-season meeting back on Sept. 2.
The Panthers held UB's two leading scorers in check, and outshot the Purple Knights 14-5 through ninety minutes.
Adelphi struck early too, after
Alexis Hellman's left-footed volley caromed off the inside of the left post four minutes into the contest.
The Brown and Gold -- who have seven one-goal victories on their 2023 ledger -- tacked on another goal late in the second half, when
Dylann Trahey ran onto
Kayleigh Goodrich's back-heel touch and put a strike into the left corner with 9:54 left.
Graduate keeper
Krista Aliscio took sole possession of second place amongst the program's career single-season shutout leaders with her 11th clean sheet of 2023.
Separated by only four miles, the Panthers and Lions will go head-to-head in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday at 12 noon at Motamed Field.
