Garden City, N.Y. - For the third time in Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa's tenure, the Adelphi University women's soccer team has secured a spot in the NCAA Division II East Region final after defeating Molloy, 3-0, Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers (14-3-4) have not made it to the third round of the NCAA tournament since the 2016 season, when they were defeated by Bridegport, 2-1.
A familiar first half goal from
Alexis Hellman put the Panthers up 1-0 in the 34th minute. Hellman buried a shot to the right side after
Lola Kochanskyj let a pass from
Sophia Cataldo cross the box, beating a Lion defender and keeper Elyse Munoz.
The home team put four shots on goal in the opener, compared to Molloy's single shot, despite a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks for the half.
Hellman's second tally came in the 52nd minute of play, when
Gia Mandile's throw in landed in the center of the box, giving her enough room to turn around and strike the ball to the lower left side of the net.
Up 2-0, Adelphi got two more shots on goal before
Kara DeBlaiso tripped up her defender to loft a shot to the right side, further extending the Panthers' lead.
The Cats defense did a good job managing the Lion attack, holding them to just two shots on goal with only five shots total for the day. Adelphi keeper
Krista Aliscio recorded two saves and her 14th win of the season.
Adelphi will rematch the College of Saint Rose in the NCAA Third Round after the Golden Knights defeated Southern New Hampshire 2-0 on Sunday. The game will be held Thursday, Nov. 30 or Friday, Dec. 1 at a location and time to be determined.
