Women's Hoops Oulasts AIC In NE10 Opener, 63-58

Garden City, N.Y. - With an even third frame from both sides, the Adelphi University women's basketball team outlasted American International College on Wednesday evening, to earn its first victory this season, 63-58 in Northeast-10 Conference action.

After a first quarter that saw the Panthers (1-2) leading by four, the Yellowjackets (2-1) came back with 20 points to hold a one-point advantage at the break.

Adelphi's field goal percentage steadily increased throughout the second and third frames, enough to match AIC's output in the third as both sides contributed 20. It was Victoria Morgan's basket at 8:15 in the third that stopped a 13-2 run in favor of the visitors. The Panthers trailed by at-most eight, but used a 7-0 run capped with a Morgan trey to cut the Yellowjacket lead to one with 10 minutes to go in regulation.

The teams traded points to start the fourth, but back-to-back makes from downtown from Kaitlyn O'Connell put the home team ahead at 55-52. Stale shooting on the floor from either side lasted nearly two minutes until Ruzgar Christina Boyle broke the silence for AIC. A quick response from Rolanda Robinson, plus an untimely turnover for the Yellowjackets allowed Adelphi to stay in the lead for good.

The Cats turned 19 AIC turnovers into 16 points while turning 11 offensive boards into 14 second chance points.

O'Connell and Robinson both chipped in a team-high 12 points while also grabbing two steals each. Three other players accounted for double digit scoring including a 10-point showing from Isabella Asencio off the bench. Jenna Jordan nearly captured a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Adelphi will return to the Center for Recreation and Sports on Saturday (Nov. 18) for non-conference action against Mercy University. To accommodate the 2023 NE10 Volleyball Championship, the game has been moved up to a 12:30 p.m. start, after previously being scheduled for 60 minutes later.
