Rockville Centre, N.Y. - A made free throw from
Andrew Delaney forced overtime on Saturday, but the Adelphi University men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season to Queens College 83-79 inside Quealy Gymnasium.
Delaney finished just shy of a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points as the Panthers (1-1) were led by
Dayshaun Walton, who accounted for 19 points in the loss.
Evenly matched in both rebounds and turnovers, the Panthers held a four-point advantage heading into halftime. Queens, who was led by a 24-point performance by Sunnie Diamond quickly evened the score in the second frame, just forty seconds into the half.
Adelphi maintained a short advantage throughout the second half but found themselves at a stalemate following a 1-for-2 chance at the charity stripe from Delaney. Both teams had chances at the net but nothing fell, forcing an overtime period.
Queens leapt out to a seven-point lead just over two minutes into the frame, making it very difficult for Adelphi to overcome.
Matthew Price knocked down back to back three-pointers to bring the game within reach with 14 seconds left on the clock, but it was not enough time for the Panthers to change the result.
Dave Duke and the Cats open up at home on Saturday, Nov. 18 when they host American International in conference action.
