Men's Hoops Rolls in 2023-24 Opener at Molloy, 85-61

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's basketball team led wire-to-wire in its season-opening 85-61 win at Long Island rival Molloy University on Friday night.

Four scored in double figures to lead Adelphi (1-0) to their season-opening win at the ECC/NE10 Challenge, a seventh opening victory in the nine completed seasons of head coach Dave Duke's tenure.

In just 24 minutes on the floor, sophomore Dayshaun Walton co-led all scorers with 18 points, adding five rebounds, three steals and three assists to his stat line. Elijah Lewis shot 5-for-7 from the floor, with three three-pointers, for 16 points, while Andrew Delaney (13 points) and Elijah Perry (11 points) combined for 24 of Adelphi's 37 points from bench players.

Molloy (1-0) also got 18 points from Chris Stokel, and 11 from Bryce Merchant off the bench.

Adelphi set the tone for the contest with a 10-0 run to start the game, with its first bucket coming off a dunk from rookie David Luberoff just 30 seconds after the opening whistle. The Lions made it a one-possession game three times in the opening half, with the AU lead whittling to two (26-24) on a Sey Dieng three-pointer with 5:56 left in the half.

But no tie would be on the cards. Seven different Panthers combined to score 21 of the last 30 points of the half to take a 47-33 lead at the break, and the 'Cats led by 20 or more points for much of the second half after scoring 10 of the first 13 points of the second frame. Their game-high lead was 25 twice over the second 20 minutes.

Adelphi closes out play at the ECC/NE10 Challenge on Saturday at Molloy, taking on Queens College in a 6 p.m. contest.
