Albany, N.Y. - As two nationally-ranked teams went head-to-head to close out the regular season, the No. 15 Adelphi University women's soccer team fell short in its upset bid of No. 1 The College of Saint Rose Wednesday night, falling by a 3-1 result at Sullivan Field in Albany.
Not only were both teams among the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 entering play, Saint Rose (16-0-1, 10-0-1 NE10) and Adelphi (10-2-4, 7-1-3 NE10) headlined the latest East Region rankings announced by the NCAA.
Before the opening whistle, Saint Rose and Adelphi had already been locked in as the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively, in the NE10 Championship field.
The loss snapped a 14-game unbeaten streak for the Panthers, who only last suffered a defeat in their season opener against Wilmington on Aug. 31. It was the longest such streak for the program since 2015.
Even despite being limited to three shots in their NE10 Championship re-match, the Panthers were even at 1-all with the top-ranked Golden Knights after 45 minutes.
In no bigger time to score her first collegiate goal,
Micaella Romagno evaded the Saint Rose defense and struck a
Gia Mandile touch inside the right post for the 33rd-minute equalizer.
Saint Rose made a change in goal after the intermission, but less than a minute into the second half, the hosts took the lead for good.
Now the first Adelphi goalkeeper to crack the school's all-time single-season shutout leaders since 2017,
Krista Aliscio made three saves in the effort.
Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa and the Panthers will now prepare for the start of the NE10 Championship, which begins with first-round action Sunday (Nov. 5) against No. 7 seed American International College at Motamed Field at 1 p.m.
