Garden City, N.Y. - The No. 2 seed Adelphi University women's soccer team took down seventh-seeded American International College, 1-0, in NE10 Championship quarterfinal action Sunday afternoon at Motamed Field in Garden City.
The win propels the 'Cats into Thursday's semifinal, in which Adelphi will host either No. 3 seed Southern New Hampshire University or No. 6 seed Bentley University at a time to be determined.
Adelphi (11-2-4) played a strong possession game over the course of ninety minutes. The Brown and Gold spent seventy percent of its time in the attacking half of the field, as opposed to AIC's thirty-three percent.
It was
Alexis Hellman's tie-breaking goal in the final minutes of the first half that stood up as the game's only goal.
With some space right outside of the area, Hellman played a left-footed strike towards goal that tipped off the outstretched hands of AIC netminder Sara Avery.
Although
Dylann Trahey and
Gia Mandile just pushed their second-half opportunities wide to stretch the Adelphi lead, the back line preserved the shutout for the Panthers.
Adelphi limited AIC to only five shots in the match. Graduate keeper
Krista Aliscio stopped all three shots on goal to earn her ninth shutout of 2023.
Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa and the Panthers now await word on their next opponent. Stay tuned to
