Garden City, N.Y. - With matches still to be played by those teams trailing in the standings, the Adelphi University women's tennis team guaranteed itself a share of the NE10 regular-season title, after Monday's 6-1 win against Saint Anselm College in its final league match of the regular season.
It is the first regular-season championship for the 'Cats since 2019, when Adelphi posted a 9-1 conference record to supplant itself atop the NE10 table.
The Panthers have rattled off a close-to-unbeaten fall in 2023, posting an 8-1 record toward obtaining the NE10's best regular-season record.
New Haven and Southern New Hampshire will wrap up their conference schedules this weekend, but Adelphi remains in line to earn the NE10 Championship's top overall seed.
"Winning the regular-season title is always something to be proud of, and the team is continuing to work hard to build on this achievement," said Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas. "There are a lot of quality teams out there and the competitive level of the conference is high this season."
A defeat of NE10 Rookie of the Year
Sanne Selmer Gilje at No. 1 singles didn't deter the Panthers from achieving their goal.
Between the No. 2 through No. 4 singles matches, the 'Cats lost a total of three games.
Roisin Boyd cleaned up at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 result. Fellow freshman
Astrid Bergh triumphed 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 4 flight, and
Katarina Liedbeck earned the clinching point in convincing fashion (6-1, 6-1) at No. 2 singles.
Caterina Federici prevailed 6-0, 6-3 in straight sets at No. 5 singles, while
Carolina Chaves was a straight-set winner (6-2, 6-0) at the No. 6 flight.
The Panthers will prepare for next week's NE10 Tournament with a non-conference tune-up at Molloy University next Monday (Oct. 16) at 2:30 p.m.
"We now look forward to our preparation for playoffs, with the hopes of having a strong showing in the postseason," Fakas concluded.
Following their victory at ITA's, Liedbeck and Boyd will first attend the ITA Cup this Thursday through Saturday (Oct. 12-14) at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga.
