Garden City, N.Y. - A tight first two sets and a comparatively easier third gave the Adelphi University volleyball team a sweep of the College of Saint Rose on Saturday afternoon inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
Adelphi (12-5, 2-1 NE10) remained impressive with a lead in victory, posting its 10th straight-sets win this year. But the Brown and Gold rallied from first- and second-set deficits to do it.
Though Adelphi started the match quickly with an 11-6 lead, Saint Rose won 10 of the next 11 points to wrestle the lead away. The visitors led by two as late as 19-17, and by one at 23-22, but out of a timeout, two Panther kills and a
Jamaya Harris ace helped the home team pocket the set. Set two proved similar, though Saint Rose's lead was earlier: From 13-11, nine of the next 11 points went the home team's way and the lead never changed hands again.
The third frame was all Adelphi, though matters got much more complicated after an 11-0 run that put the home team ahead 19-6. An
Anna Oden kill gave Adelphi its first match point at 24-12, which the 'Cats converted five points later on one final miscue from the Golden Knights.
A balanced attack helped Adelphi to victory, as eight Panthers posted at least one kill.
Macarty McQueen had a team-high nine, while
Lilyen McCarthy and
Samantha Meehan chipped in eight and seven, respectively.
Jessica Vargas recorded a match-high 11 kills for Saint Rose (4-12, 0-4 NE10), but the Golden Knights dropped to 0-6 on the road this year.
The Panthers are back in action on Wednesday, when they'll take a break from league play in a 7 p.m. match with Molloy University. First serve is slated for 7 p.m., and Adelphi will celebrate its annual Dig Pink match benefiting breast cancer awareness and the Side-Out Foundation.
