Garden City, N.Y. - Early leads continue to be kind to the Adelphi University volleyball team. The Panthers recorded a 3-0 sweep of local rival Molloy University on Wednesday night inside the Center for Recreation and Sports, earning them their 11th straight-sets win so far this season.
The Panthers also snapped a four-match skid dating back to 2019 against their one-time East Coast Conference rival with the victory, improving the all-time head-to-head between the two schools to 18-4 in AU's favor.
Adelphi (13-5) got 10 kills apiece from
Noelle Alberda and
Lilyen McCarthy, with the latter hitting a sparkling .500 in victory. The former, meanwhile, notched her sixth double-digit kill performance of the season, and first in two weeks. Setter
Kambel Fiser again sparkled on both sides of the ball with her fifth double-double of the season, and third in a row, oin 30 assists and a team-best 12 digs.Â
The 'Cats led from the jump in the first set, as back-to-back kills from
Anna Oden and
Macarty McQueen set the tone for the match. The two teams were never even in the opening set after that. Adelphi had a 5-0 run midway, and a 6-0 run to cap the set, the latter of which was impressively started by three consecutive kills from McCarthy's hand.Â
It was more of the same in sets two and three. A 5-0 run from 4-4 in the second, capped by a two of AU's nine aces as a club for the match by
Jaydin Nowak, gave the home team a lead it never relinquished in the frame behind an impressive .423 hitting percentage. A later 8-0 run, where Alberda struck for two kills and
Jamaya Harris hit two aces, helped AU sprint ahead 2-0.
In set three, a 5-0 run from 2-1 down—one of just two leads Molloy (7-11) had in the match—put Adelphi ahead for good, and from 13-12, a 7-1 run gave the Brown and Gold breathing room.
Adelphi is off for nearly a week but returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at Southern Connecticut State University. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
