Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Comes Up Short in Rain Against Assumption, 1-0

Garden City, N.Y. - In a game plagued by heavy weather, the Adelphi University field hockey team dropped a low-scoring affair to Assumption University on Saturday afternoon, by a final score of 1-0.

The first 15 minutes were marred by each team trying to get a grip of the playing surface. Passes would often stop in puddles of water due to heavy rain, leading to a slower than usual pace.

Despite this, the two teams were able to tally some shots off of the three combined penalty corners. The defenses stood tall like they did most of the game, leaving the game scoreless after one.

Weather continued to riddle the action through the second frame, as the shot total increased to a combined four attempts. A pair of penalty corners for the Greyhounds generated some better offensive opportunities, but the game remained deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the break.

Drama began to heighten to start the second half, as the visitors immediately began to apply pressure in the Brown and Gold's defensive zone.

After an initial shot from Mia Saleh was saved by Amanda Montiel, Assumption's Lily Daly came in for the follow to break the ice for her eighth goal of the season.

Following the ensuing restart, Amanda Lee combed her way through the defense on a fast break and fired a ball past the Blue and White's Paige Gillette. However, as the ball continued to roll, it struck the post and Emiline Biggin was unable to follow, leaving the game at 1-0 in favor of the Greyhounds.

Pace of play began to pick up when the rain let up in the final quarter, with four shots going off in the first eight minutes. The Panthers began to find more time in the scoring circle, earning two penalty corners in the final five minutes. Despite making a late push, the hosts couldn't get another shot on goal, leading to the Assumption victory.

Head Coach Jess Mulhern and Adelphi will now begin a short two-game road trip, starting on Tuesday (Oct. 10), when they take on American International College. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
