Springfield, Mass. - On a game-winning overtime goal by
Kylie Peregoy, the Adelphi University field hockey team won its match-up at American International College on Tuesday evening, by a final score of 2-1.
In a game with potential NE10 Tournament implications, the feel-out period comprised of just five combined shots and four penalty corners. While the second quarter didn't see much more in the shot category, the Panthers rattled off nine penalty corners to begin establishing themselves in the offensive zone.
The Yellow Jackets struck first less than two minutes into the second frame, with Fenna Voll taking a pass from Mia Wood for her first score of the year. Despite
Amanda Lee winding her shot past the goalkeeper, a defensive save stalled Adelphi's offense, going into the break still facing a one-goal deficit.
Looking to get back on their feet,
Kelly Johnson fired another heater from the top of the scoring circle, and an initial save was then put back by
Emiline Biggin to even the score at 1-all. The offense was unable to find more opportunities, as the deadlock headed into the final 15 minutes.
Dialing up the pressure, the visitors took nine shots in the final ten minutes of regulation. The referees even granted Lee a penalty stroke following a defensive violation, which she missed wide. After three penalty corners in the final three minutes, the game still hadn't been decided, going into a fifth period.
Refusing to let up, Adelphi managed to keep the ball in its offensive zone for the majority of the overtime period. Earning an additional eight penalty corners, chances increased with ten more shots on goal. With a feed coming in hot from Lee,
Kylie Peregoy tapped a ball past the goalkeeper to end the game in thrilling fashion.
Head Coach
Jess Mulhern and the Panthers will finish their road trip on Friday (Oct. 13), when they travel to Southern Connecticut State University. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
