Waltham, Mass. - In a year when the 'Cats have generated half their goals in the second half, the Adelphi University men's soccer team exploded for three tallies in the final 45 minutes of a 3-1 win over Bentley University in an NE10 match-up Wednesday at Bentley Soccer Field.
Each of the three Adelphi (6-3-1, 3-1 NE10) goal-scorers netted their first tallies of 2023 in the effort.
Despite being held to two shots on goal in the opening forty-five, the Panthers still managed eight shots on goal through the ninety-minute match.
Adelphi especially kept Bentley goalkeeper Joe Griffin occupied in the second half, until -- from a short angle --
Benji Jones slotted home the game's first goal at the near post.
Jones, who hadn't scored since October 2021, broke the scoreless tie in the 60th minute.
Jones was also busy on the distribution side. Eight minutes after putting the 'Cats on the board, Jones ignited a counter off a Bentley turnover and played a perfect cross for
Callum Walmsley to make it a 2-0 game.
Bentley sliced the deficit in half in the final minutes, but
Rory Duggan went coast-to-coast on a clearance to tap in his first collegiate goal with ten seconds left to end it.
Since starting the season at 0-2, Adelphi has now won six of its last seven to ascend toward second place in the NE10 standings.
Daniel De La Heras made the start for the Panthers, and stopped four shots. Griffin was the recipient of five saves for the Falcons.
Head Coach
Gary Book and his Adelphi squad are back in action Saturday (Oct. 7), with a 6 p.m. kickoff at home against Assumption University at Motamed Field.
