Pleasantville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team emphatically returned to its winning ways on Tuesday on the road at Pace University, rolling to its first NE10 victory of the season.
After seeing its six-match winning streak snapped Saturday in a 3-1 loss to American International, Adelphi (11-5, 1-1 NE10) took a tight first set against the Setters before cruising to a three-set win. A 12-6 AU lead turned into a 22-21 first-set deficit, though, after Pace won six straight points after siding out at 21-16.
But Adelphi had no interest in falling behind, as
Macarty McQueen picked up two kills in the last five points to put the set in the Panthers' pocket.
Sets two and three were all AU. A 14-3 run (including nine points in a row) kicked off by a
Delaney Kiendra kill gave the Panthers a commanding lead in the middle set, from 8-6 to 21-9, and the third set saw more of the same. From 8-5 in the third, a 12-5 run, in which
Samantha Meehan recorded four kills, put Adelphi ahead 20-10. McQueen later tallied three kills in Adelphi's final five points, and Meehan hammered home the finisher that ended the match in style.
Adelphi has now recorded nine of its 11 wins so far this year in straight sets.
The trio of Meehan, McCarthy and McQueen were responsible for 29 of Adelphi's 40 kills for the match, with Meehan and McCarthy tying for the match-high total of 10. It was Meehan's first double-digit effort in kills since the weekend of Sept. 15-16, when she recorded 14 and 13, respectively, against Wilmington and Quincy.
In addition,
Kambel Fiser continued the in-form stretch for Adelphi setters, as she followed up
Brenna Valsted's three straight double-doubles over the last 11 days with one of her own thanks to 27 assists and 17 digs.
Conference action continues for Adelphi on Saturday, as the Panthers take on the College of Saint Rose in an NE10 tilt beginning at 1 p.m.
