Worcester, Mass. - The Adelphi University volleyball team matched its high watermark for consecutive wins in 2023 with a 3-0 sweep of Assumption University on Sunday in Northeast-10 Conference action.
After winning six straight matches in September, the Panthers (16-5, 4-1 NE10) have again won six straight.
The 'Cats tallied their 13th 3-0 win this season behind the three-headed attack of
Lilyen McCarthy,
Noelle Alberda and
Macarty McQueen, who all tallied 10 kills or more, and Adelphi's .310 team hitting percentage marked its fourth-highest mark for the season to date as well as its best offensive team output in an NE10 contest this year.
McCarthy, who tallied a team-best 14 kills in AU's 3-2 comeback win over Queens on Thursday, led the Panthers again vs. the Greyhounds with 12 kills and a .458 hitting percentage. Alberda also sparkled with 11 kills on a .450 attack percentage, while McQueen struck for 10—her eighth time swinging four double figures this year.
Piloting the attack,
Brenna Valsted dished out 38 assists, her second-highest assist total for the season after she recorded 50 in AU's 3-2 win at Bridgeport on Sept. 25. Adelphi recorded 61 digs as a team, with 41 coming from the trio of
Jamie Yonker (17),
Jaydin Nowak (13) and
Samantha Meehan (11).
The two teams went tit-for-tat in the first set, as Adelphi doubled up Assumption early on at 8-4 and 10-5 and lead by as much as six in the middle. Assumption clawed to within one four times down the stretch, but never got event, and an
Anna Oden kill put the set in AU's pocket. In set two, Assumption failed to convert a set point—a service error at 24-23 crucially gave Adelphi the sideout—and back-to-back kills from McCarthy put the Panthers up 2-0. AU's momentum continued quickly into the third to finish things off: Seven kills and three aces from the Panthers in the first 20 points put them up 15-5.
Up next, Adelphi closes out its non-conference regular-season action at Post University on Wednesday, Oct. 25.
