Garden City, N.Y. - Twenty-four hours after losing its first dual match of the 2023 season, the Adelphi University women's tennis team was back on track Monday.
The Panthers (5-1, 4-1 NE10) beat Assumption University (9-2, 3-2 NE10) at home, 5-2, in a match that was originally scheduled for last Tuesday but postponed due to rain. It was also the first of two matches Adelphi played against Assumpion on Monday, as the men's team followed with a 4-3 win of their own.Â
A sweep of the doubles point helped Adelphi set the tone for the match, and three straight-set wins in singles helped the Panthers quickly put the match to bed. AU already clinched the point thanks to 6-1 and 6-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, respectively, beforeÂ
Caterina Federici andÂ
Sanne Selmer Gilje edged No. 2 doubles in a tiebreak that stretched past the traditional first-to-seven points, 7-6(6).
Selmer Gilje, the reigning NE10 Player of the Week, parlayed that momentum into a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win over Marie Knispel at No. 1 singles. She was followed byÂ
Astrid Bergh, who also lost just two games in her own win at No. 4 singles, and
Roisin Boyd, who clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jill Schoeneich in the No. 3 spot.
Adelphi's fifth and final point came courtesy of Federici, who battled from a set down at No. 5 singles to beat Caitlin Sze in a match tiebreak, 4-6, 7-5, 10-7. It was redemption of sorts, too, for Federici, who lost a three-setter in Adelphi's 4-3 setback against New Haven on Sunday.Â
Next up, Adelphi will play its third match in four days Wednesday when it hosts American International College in a 12 p.m. NE10 tilt. Head coach
Rebecca Fakas and the Panthers will celebrate Senior Day before the match, honoring Adelphi's lone senior Chaves.
