Men's Golf Captures NE10 Championship for First Time Since 2013

Longmeadow, Mass. - The Adelphi University men's golf team made history on Tuesday afternoon, winning its first NE10 Championship since 2013, at Twin Hills Country Club in Longmeadow.

As ten schools vied for the NE10 title, the Brown and Gold leveraged two rounds of four-over 288 to hold a six-stroke lead after Day 1.

As the 'Cats produced a six-over 290 on the final day, the 'Cats finished with a two-day total of 866, capturing the championship by five strokes over two-time defending champion Assumption University.

The Panthers had three golfers finish among the Top 6 on the leaderboard, highlighted by Filip Wetterqvist and Alec Ramos' NE10 All-Championship Team selections.

Wetterqvist shot par or lower each day to score a one-under 212 after three rounds. Alec Ramos tied for third after shooting a two-under 69 on the final day, while sophomore Johnny Solari used two rounds of one-over 72 to finish sixth.

Adelphi dominated the statistical leaderboard, as well. Ramos sank eagles on the opening hole of Rounds 2 and 3 to lead all golfers competing. Wetterqvist and Francis Lanuza finished third and fourth in birdies with 12 and 11, respectively. Wetterqvist also led all golfers in average score on Par 4's (3.85).

Additionally, the first NE10 Elite 24 Award was presented to Adelphi's Mason Rivera, who possessed the highest cumulative grade-point average at the championship site with a 3.971 GPA as an Economics major.

The team used head coach David Mattana's motivation heading into the final day, who reminded them "Uneasy lies the head that sleeps on the lead."

"The whole fall, I told them I'm happy to take last in every other tournament if we win this one" said Mattana after his first championship at the helm.

"It was a lot of pressure, this was the goal for our entire team this fall... there's nothing like winning as a team " added Wetterqvist

"My freshman year here we were struggling, and ever since then Coach Mattana has been building our team.. to come out here and win, it was just awesome," remarked Ramos.

Mattana and the Panthers -- who now earn an automatic bid to NCAA Regionals this spring -- won't be gone for long, as they host the Panther Invitational next week (Oct. 25-26) at Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, N.Y.
