Armas' Two Assists Fuel Men's Soccer's 2-0 Shutout on Spirit Weekend

Garden City, N.Y. - The first points of Aleksei Armas' career helped lead the Adelphi University men's soccer team to a 2-0 Spirit Weekend victory over Saint Anselm College in NE10 action Saturday at Motamed Field.

Members of the 1973 Adelphi men's soccer team who were in attendance to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of its semifinal appearance at the NCAA Division II National Championship were treated to quite an effort by the 'Cats.

Not only did the Panthers (8-4-1, 4-2 NE10) outshoot the Hawks 14-5 throughout the ninety minutes, Adelphi possessed the ball a season-high 70 percent of the time.

In the first half alone, the Brown and Gold's possession time stood at 72 percent. The result was a rewarding 1-0 Adelphi lead at the half.

Armas, who engineered both scoring chances for the 'Cats, hit a low cross in the final seconds of the first half that Richard DeBrosse first-timed at the far post.

Both Adelphi goals on the day came off stunning crosses by the second-year midfielder.

From the right flank, Armas played a late cross into the area for Victor Castel, who put a header on towards goal that beat the Saint Anselm keeper with five minutes left in the contest.

In goal, Daniel De La Heras collected his third clean sheet of 2023. All three shutouts for the keeper have come at home -- the first since Sept. 26.

With only one more home game on the docket for Gary Book's side, the Panthers will begin a three-game road trip -- which begins Tuesday (Oct. 17) at 7 p.m. at University of New Haven.
