Volleyball Stays Hot With Sweep of SCSU, 3-0

New Haven, Conn. - The Adelphi University volleyball team made its 10 wins in its last 11 contests with another 3-0 sweep on Tuesday night over the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University.

Adelphi (14-5, 3-1 NE10) has now recorded 12 of its 14 wins this year in straight sets. But Tuesday's affair had a markedly different tone than the majority of Adelphi's other 3-0 wins this year in that AU came from behind to win each frame.

The Brown and Gold trailed 9-6 and 23-22 in set one; 17-13, 22-20 and 23-22 in set two; and 13-4 and 20-19 in set three, but responded with aplomb to the adversity each time. An 11-3 run from 9-6 behind in the first set gave the 'Cats breathing room, and six of the last eight points helped it steal set two.

Adelphi was in fact out-hit by the Owls (11-11, 1-4 NE10) in each of the first two sets, as the home team hit 11 kills to just one attack error in the first set, and the Panthers hit in the negative in set two.

In the third, SCSU looked on course to at least force a fourth as an early lead ballooned to a set-high nine behind a 6-0 run, where the Owls hit four of their eight overall service aces, but Adelphi saved its best Houdini act for last. After 14-3 run for the 'Cats seemed to flip the script entirely, six of the last seven points also went AU's way to safely pocket another straight-sets triumph.

Macarty McQueen recorded a game-high 13 kills, the only Panther to hit double figures on the night, while Jamie Yonker notched more than 20 digs for the sixth time this year with 23. Kambel Fiser and Brenna Valsted split setting duties, recording 10 and 14 assists.

Carissa Michel swung for 11 kills for SCSU, tallying a double-double with 10 digs.

Up next, the 'Cats take a break from league play as they head up the Long Island Expressway to face ECC foe Queens College on Thursday night. First serve in Flushing is set for 7 p.m.
