Men's Soccer Answers Three Times in Resilient 4-3 Victory at Queens

Flushing, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's soccer team trailed three separate times, but valiantly pulled off a 4-3 come-from-behind win Wednesday night against Queens College at the QC Varsity Soccer Field.

On each of the three occasions that the Knights (5-5-2) led throughout the evening, the Panthers (7-4-1) responded almost instantaneously.

First, in the 39th minute, Luca Boast played a ball towards goal from the left flank that dipped underneath the crossbar, tying the score only 9:59 after Queens grabbed the initial lead.

Although the hosts led 2-1 at the break, Queens gave the ball away deep in its own end to start the second half, resulting in Jesper Mikkelsen's equalizer thirty-eight seconds in.

As the Knights went in front one last time in the 48th minute, Alessio Consoli got tripped up inside the area on a counter minutes later, thereby awarding the 'Cats a penalty.

With a penalty already to his credit in 2023, Consoli slowly approached the spot, before sliding his attempt inside the right post to level the score at 3-3.

The two teams combined for four goals on just 11 shots in the second half, after Queens attempted 14 total shots of its own in the first forty-five.

It was in the waning moments that Victor Castel -- who entered tonight's match with two game-winners in his last four contests -- came through with another.

After Queens' Juan Cruz Ladino came off his line to steer a ball out of danger, Mikkelsen dribbled past the keeper and fed Castel for the game-winner with 3:43 left.

Head Coach Gary Book and the Panthers will next face Saint Anselm College in an NE10 match-up Saturday (Oct. 14) at noon at Motamed Field. As part of Adelphi Spirit Weekend, the team will celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the program's national semifinal appearance at the 1973 NCAA Division II National Championship with a halftime recognition ceremony.
