Garden City, N.Y. - With two chances nearing regulation to send the game to extra time, the Adelphi University men's basketball team was stopped by Saint Anselm College, 70-68, on Saturday, inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
With the defeat, four different players still found their way to double-digit scoring, led by
Dayshaun Walton who accounted for 20. Adelphi's bench managed to pour in 16 points compared to Saint Anselm's six.
It was the visitors who managed to string together their offense in the early going, using their best scoring run of eight to keep the home team at bay.
The Panthers (10-12, 4-10 NE10) weren't as productive as they have been from three-point range in the opener, only knocking down three on 13 attempts. At the break, Adelphi was down 10, after cutting into the Hawks' largest lead (18) with three minutes left in the first half.
Walton sparked a an 11-0 run in favor of Adelphi just under four minutes into the second half to bring the Saint Anselm lead to single digits. For that stretch, the Hawks (15-5, 11-3 NE10), who are receiving votes in this week's NABC Coaches poll, were held quiet as a result of defensive pressure from the hosts that caused three turnovers.
Adelphi continued to chip away at the Hawk advantage, but a three-point shooting foul against
Andrew Delaney with 4:47 resulted in three makes from the charity stripe, which put Saint A's back up by 10.
Elijah Lewis made all six of his free throws in the ensuing four minutes, coupled with a Walton driving layup to come within two of the road team.
Despite a defensive rebound, and seven seconds remaining, two attempts went up for Adelphi but did not fall, resulting in the narrow defeat.
Dave Duke and his squad will be back on the road next week when they take on Le Moyne College on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Tip-off is scheduled to follow the women's game at approximately 7:30 p.m.
