Garden City, N.Y. - On Wednesday, the Adelphi University women's basketball team hoped for more good luck on its own floor, but lost by a 57-52 final to No. 21 Assumption University in NE10 action at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
While both teams struggled from three in the first half, Adelphi still managed a 14-2 run over a six-minute stretch that gave the hosts a 24-16 second-quarter lead.
Senior forward
Jenna Jordan controlled the inside play with 13 first-half points for the Panthers, who led 26-20 at the break.
A 14-6 second quarter by the 'Cats was also spearheaded by Assumption transfer
Lauren Hammersley's seven points against her former squad.
In the latter half, Assumption took advantage of 12 offensive boards and eight Adelphi turnovers, to the tune of 13 second-chance points and 11 points off turnovers.
It resulted in a 37-26 differential over the final two quarters that put the Greyhounds (16-2, 9-2 NE10) ahead for good.
A
Christina Sanchez transition lay-up to open the fourth quarter tied the game at 40-all, but a 13-4Â Assumption response was the separation the visitors needed.
Jordan put up her fourth 20-spot of the season, as part of a game-high 20-point, 15-rebound effort.
Ty'zhea Hawkins poured in 15 points, and Hammersley added 10 points.
Head Coach
Sade Jackson and her Adelphi squad now travel to Colchester, Vt. this weekend for a 1:30 p.m. opening tip at Saint Michael's College on Saturday (Jan. 21).
