Threes Continue to Pour Down But Women's Hoops Falls at AIC, 62-60

Springfield, Mass. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team continued to make its presence felt from beyond the arc, but lost a 62-60 nailbiter Saturday to NE10 rival American International College at Butova Gymnasium.

After making twelve threes at home on Tuesday, the NE10's second-leading three-point shooting team -- entering today's action -- went back to work with an 8-for-18 day from deep.

A 12-1 Adelphi run over the last five minutes of the opening quarter had the visitors leading 22-13 after one period of play. Lauren Hammersley was dialed in from long distance once again, burying back-to-back threes to close out the quarter.

Over the last three games, the Panthers (7-8, 4-6 NE10) have sunk 29-of-65 three-pointers for a spectacular .446 shooting percentage.

Freshman guard Christina Sanchez sank another trey to open the second quarter, but eight costly turnovers by Adelphi in the period sent the two teams into the half in a 27-27 tie.

While AIC (9-7, 6-4 NE10) took the lead out of the gate to start the second half, the Panthers kept it close and Rolanda Robinson struck with a three late in the fourth to put her squad back in front.

A timeout was taken by the Yellow Jackets, who drew up what became a game-winning three-point play by Taylor Tomlinson with 43 seconds left.

In addition to making key foul shots in the closing seconds, AIC also limited Adelphi to just one made field goal in the final minute of regulation.

Jenna Jordan not only posted a double-double, but had one of her best days on the glass with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Ty'zhea Hawkins kept her strong play going with a line of 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

The Panthers are in action next at home, when they welcome No. 18 Assumption University to the Center for Recreation and Sport for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off on Wednesday night (Jan. 18).
