Garden City N.Y. - The no. 9 Adelphi University field hockey team began its regular season with a 4-3 overtime win over no. 10 University of New Haven on Monday, earning Head Coach Jess Mulhern's '12 first career win for her alma mater.
Jillian Riche was responsible for the game winner, coming on late in the first overtime frame with fresh legs and tapping in a shot from Morgan Minicozzi.
Within the first eight minutes of the contest the Chargers (0-1) came out attacking with Katherine Trammel getting a couple shots on goal before a penalty corner was charged to New Haven. The visitors got on the board first after Katherine Trammel inserted a ball that Kelli Jacobson sent in and deflected off Zharria John's stick and past rookie keeper Mirthe Karstens.
The Brown and Gold tied the game a few minutes later, off a penalty corner which Bianca Bachisin inserted, but also managed to get a stick on, on its way to the goal from Kylie Peregoy.Â
A few minutes after, last year's Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year, Kaylee Deleva found the back of the cage to give Adelphi the lead after one quarter of action.Â
In the beginning of the second period, New Haven's John notched another goal - this time teaming up with Taylor Geaglone to knot the game at two-all.
Before the end of the first half, the Chargers tallied their third goal of the game, giving New Haven a 3-2 lead at halftime.
As the second half began, both teams created scoring chances but were unable to put it in the back of the cage. With only three minutes left in the third, Ali Nagy scored off a rebounded shot to tie the game at three a piece.
The Panthers and Chargers headed to overtime as the game was tied 3-3 as regulation expired.
In overtime, Adelphi stayed on the attack, generating four penalty corners before Riche scored the game winner on a shot sent in by Minicozzi.
Both teams tallied 21 penalty corners in total, Adelphi securing 11 and New Haven taking 10.
The Panthers next game will be on the road against no. 4 Millersville this Thursday, Sept. 8.
