Garden City, N.Y. - Behind a pair of first-half goals, the Adelphi University women's soccer team pulled off a 2-1 upset of No. 8 nationally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University in an NE10 tilt Saturday at Motamed Field.
In each of their last two meetings versus the Penmen (5-2, 2-2 NE10)Â on home turf, the Panthers (6-2-1, 4-0-1 NE10) have knocked off SNHUÂ as the No. 8 ranked team in the country (last before in 2019).
With the win, Adelphi remains atop the NE10 standings with a conference record of 4-0-1 and expands its unbeaten streak to five consecutive games.
The Panthers played a dominant opening 45 minutes. Not only did Adelphi control possession at a clip of 54 percent, the hosts sent SNHU into the locker room trailing 2-0.
Adelphi came knocking on the doorstep early, and punched in the game's first goal in the 13th minute, when
Gia Mandile tapped in a
Madison Apicella cross.
A 9-1 shot advantage in the first half,
Krista Aliscio made an outstanding clearance in the 32nd minute that fell to
Victoria Colatosti, who took it the rest of the way and planted a right-footed strike under the crossbar.
Although SNHU cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second half, the Penmen were limited to only that single shot on goal by a stingy Adelphi defense that has allowed just seven goals this season.
Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa and the Panthers will now hit the road and make a trip to Pleasantville, where they will square off with Pace University on Tuesday (Sept. 27) at 7 p.m.
