Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Late Night Thriller Results in Loss for Volleyball to SMU

Lacey, WA - While the east coast was asleep, the Adelphi University volleyball program was battling through five sets against Saint Martin's University, ultimately falling 15-13 in the deciding set Friday evening.

Four different players reached double-digit kills, led by Lilyen McCarthy who accounted for 13 with a .300 hitting percentage. Kambel Fiser paced the offense despite the loss, picking up 31 assists alongside nine digs.

After dropping the opening set 18-25, the Panthers (3-4) came back to win the next two frames to take a lead in the match. Adelphi started off the fourth with a 7-3 advantage, and ultimately held the lead for the remainder of the set. At 21-all, a hitting error and Yonker kill gave the Brown and Gold a two-point edge, however SMU used the energy in the gym to win five of the next six points to force a deciding game.

Despite a 0-3 start in the final set, the Panthers came back with with five straight points, featuring a huge stop at the net from Noelle Alberda and McCarthy. Four of the next five tallies went to the home team to knot the game at 7-7, but another pair of swings from McCarthy forced the switch of sides.

The Saints, who are off to their best start in program history this season, rattled off the ensuing five points, with the help of three Panther miscues. Samantha Meehan and Samantha Collins stopped the Saint Martin's attack to give Adelphi a fighting chance down the stretch, even with match point for the home team. Only getting within one, the teams traded an intense rally, ultimately resulting in a victory for the hosts.

Adelphi will cap its western tour with an 11:00 a.m. (2:00 p.m. EST) matchup with Westminster College before heading back to New York.
