Karstens Sets New Career High As Field Hockey Falls to #1 West Chester, 4-0

Garden City N.Y. - A new career-high in saves from freshman goalkeeper Mirthe Karstens wasn't enough on Saturday, as Adelphi University field hockey fell to no. 1 West Chester University of Pennsylvania, 4-0.

Karstens notched 18 saves, as the Panther defense held West Chester to their lowest scoring output of the season. The Rams (5-0) have outscored their opponents 33-2 thus far this season.

As the game started, the Golden Rams were on the attack, leading to the first goal of the game scored by Claudia Jaszczak from a near post shot that trickled in the cage. A few minutes later, at the 7:34 mark, Valerie Van Kuijck struck a shot that extended the visitors' lead.

West Chester's Dara Spavlik claimed the third goal of the game off a penalty corner and she was assisted by Van Kuijck. Jaszczak scored her second goal of the game off a rebound shot from Jasmine Miller that gave the Golden Rams a 4-0 lead in the third quarter.

The home team managed to get one shot towards the Rams in the early going of the second frame, but Emiline Biggin sent her shot wide, despite a one-on-one situation.

Graduate student Bianca Bachisin and sophomore Francesca Manzella each collected a defensive save in the early parts of the third and fourth periods.

The Panthers (1-3) were out played on the penalty corners 11-3 with six of them coming in the first half.

The Brown and Gold will stay in Garden City as they play no. 3 East Stroudsburg this upcoming Wednesday Sept. 21 at 4:00 p.m. The first 25 fans in attendance will receive an Adelphi branded lunch bag.
