Garden City, N.Y. - A ninth-minute goal from
Maria D'Angelo stood up as the only tally of the match in a 1-0 win for the Adelphi University women's soccer team on Saturday against Saint Michael's College in NE10 action from Motamed Field.
D'Angelo, the team's second-leading goal-scorer in 2021, picked up her fourth career game-winner with the Panthers (5-2, 3-0 NE10).
Almost nine minutes into the contest,
Ashley Borriello made a run onto a long pass from
Kayla Mushorn, and played a cross towards the far post that D'Angelo -- while falling -- headed into the back of the net.
Saint Michael's (1-2-2, 0-2-1 NE10), which was coming off a scoreless draw against No. 2 and defending national runner-up Saint Rose on Wednesday, went into the half trailing 1-0.
The Panthers outshot the Purple Knights 8-0 in the first 45 minutes of play and controlled over sixty percent of possession.
Saint Michael's' Claire Williams got behind the defense in the second half and
Krista Aliscio was tall to the task of denying a breakaway to preserve her second-consecutive shutout.
Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa and her Adelphi squad are back at it on Wednesday (Sept. 21), with a 7 p.m. match at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Conn.
