Men's Soccer Staves Off Late Surge from Molloy, 2-1

Garden City, N.Y. - On Wednesday night, the Adelphi University men's soccer team held on for a 2-1 win over local rival Molloy University in non-conference action at Motamed Field.

The Panthers (3-1-2) led 2-0 with less than 10 minutes left, until a Vaclav Borovicka foul inside the 18-yard box awarded Molloy (2-2-3) a penalty with 7:14 left.

Jonas Jacobsen converted the penalty, and Molloy nearly tied it in the final minute. A crucial tackle by Paul Todaro thwarted the opportunity and kept Adelphi ahead for good.

Once the latter half got underway, the Panthers quickly broke the scoreless deadlock from halftime.

Just 1:56 into the period, Matthew Lynch played a corner that found the head of Todaro and trickled over the goal line for the game's opening tally.

Another Panther also netted his first collegiate goal later in the half. In the 67th minute, Matteo Lazzarini cranked a shot from the top of the 18 into the lower right netting.

Adelphi outshot Molloy by a slight 15-13 count on the evening and moved to 7-0 all-time against the Lions.

Head Coach Gary Book and his Adelphi squad will make a trip on Tuesday (Sept. 20) to New Haven, Conn. for a 7 p.m. showdown under the lights at No. 15 Southern Connecticut State University in NE10 action.
