Field Hockey Loses Tough Battle at #5 Kutztown, 2-1

Kutztown, Pa. - Despite a career high effort in saves from Mirthe Karstens, the Adelphi University field hockey team lost a tough 2-1 decision to No. 5 Kutztown.

The Golden Bears (4-0) created five out of their twelve penalty corners in the first period while two of them were saved by Karstens, reigning Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week.

As the second period began, the Panthers (1-2) kept pressure in the opposition's zone but not until the 21:34 mark in the second period. Kutztown had a penalty corner and Erin Gonzalez shot one into the back of the cage thanks to an assist from Rachel Dusman to tally the first goal of the game.

At the beginning of the second half, Kutztown's Gonzalez scored her second goal of the game off a pass from Jillian Buchman to extend their lead to 2-0.

Adelphi managed to score in the final 15 minutes of regulation, cutting the deficit to one with the help of a decisive goal from the graduate student Kaylee Deleva. Amanda Lee managed two shots on the cage in the closing minutes, but it was not enough to force another period of action.

Karstens made a total of 11 saves throughout the game for Adelphi - sophomore Lee put together three shots on goal.

The Panthers will play their next game this Saturday, Sept. 17 at Motamed Field against No.1 West Chester, who they faced last season in the NCAA first round tournament. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. on Motamed Field.
