Volleyball Bested By Jefferson in Final Match at Wilmington

Wilmington, Del. - Despite a comeback win in the second frame, the Adelphi University volleyball could not stave off Jefferson University on Saturday, falling 3-1 to the 2021 CACC Champions.

Three different players reached double-digit kills, led again by Lilyen McCarthy who collected 15, as MacartyMcQueen and Noelle Alberda both accounted for 11. Brenna Valsted nearly notched a triple-double as she posted a stat line of 42 assists, 10 digs and nine kills.

The Rams (6-1, 2-0 CACC) used a perfect offensive outing in the opening set (18 kills, 0 errors) to capture a 25-17 win. Adelphi stormed back in the second, using six stops at the net to lift Adelphi (5-6) over Jefferson 25-15. The visitors saw nine errors to their 10 kills as the Brown and Gold put up 12 kills with only three miscues.

Jefferson managed to jump out to a 6-2 advantage in the third set, but the Panthers were able to come within one on an attack error to make it 18-17. Kills from Valsted, Katie Schloss and McCarthy kept the team in the contest, but the Rams were able to close out the set with the final two points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Off to a slow start in the fourth, Adelphi used seven straight points the make it 16-all in the fourth. In that stretch, McQueen collected four kills with McCarthy adding three of her own. The Rams were able to pull ahead however, closing out the set and match with eight of the final 10 points to earn its sixth straight victory.

For her efforts, McCarthy was named to the All-Tournament team. She posted 4.09 kills per set with an impressive .371 hitting percentage. She also added just under one block per set with three solo blocks. Through 11 matches she totaled 45 kills, with 11 digs.

Adelphi will host the Queens College Knights on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 7:00 p.m.
