McCarthy Leads Offense on Day Two of Tri-Match Action for Volleyball

West Hempstead, N.Y. - Lilyen McCarthy led all players in kills after Friday's double feature, as the Adelphi Unversity volleyball program lost a five-set bout to the University of Charleston before sweeping Post University to conclude its opening weekend.

McCarthy tallied 13 kills in the loss to the Golden Eagles and tacked on another eight to finish with 21 kills on the day. Katie Schloss followed suit with 19 of her own as Samantha Meehan and Samantha Collins added 18 and 16, respectively. On defense, Jamie Yonker finished the day with 55 digs as Diana Migliozzi stepped into the setter role to account fo 57 at 8.14 assists per set.

Charleston 3, Adelphi 2 (15-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-21, 14-16)
  • Charleston managed a 7-3 advantage in total blocks and held Adelphi to sub .100 hitting percentages in two of five sets.
  • The Panthers best offensive set came in the second when the home team evened the match at one-all with 16 kills wild holding the opponent to seven.
  • Collins finished with a .320 hitting percentage and nine kills after committing just one error.
  • It came down to the first set after the teams traded victories with Adelphi managing a four point lead in the early going of the final frame.
  • UC quickly evened the score at 7-7 as a kill from McCarthy forced the switch of sides - another three-point spurt gave them an 11-8 lead.
  • The Eagles scored seven of the final 11 points of the match to win it 16-14.

Adelphi 3, Post 0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-17)
  • Adelphi moves to 2-2 on the season with two regional wins under its belt.
  • The Panthers out-aced the Eagles a staggering 9-3, which proved to be the difference maker as the visitors held the advantage in blocks.
  • Jamaya Harris anchored a five-point streak in the first set to double Adelphi's score - but Post staged a 7-1 comeback down the stretch to make it close, but Schloss sealed the deal in the narrow two-point victory.
  • The Eagles led for the first time at 11-10 in the second set, using a five point run, but a Post miscue made way for Adelphi to win the final six points, with Kambel Fiser closing out the set with three service aces.
  • Adelphi worked out to another early lead to lead by at-most seven which was too great of a deficit for Post to overcome as the home team's attack put up its best team hitting percentage of the afternoon.
Adelphi will prepare for a trip out west when they travel to Saint Martin's University in Lacey, Washington for four games. They will take on Western Oregon on Sept. 1 - coverage and links to be available soon on Adelphi's schedule page.
