Volleyball Takes First Five-Set Victory of 2022 from Western Oregon

9/1/2022 10:13:00 PM

Box Score Lacey, WA -  The Adelphi University volleyball team outlasted Western Oregon University on the first day of play at the Saint Martin's University Labor Day Tournament, taking a 3-2 victory from the Wolves.

Washington native Noelle Alberda collected 10 kills and first year Macarty McQueen matched that amount, while also adding in eight digs. Jamie Yonker had 28 digs as Brenna Valsted and Kambel Fiser shared setting duties with 21 and 13 assists, respectively.

Adelphi started out hot in the opening set, using a .314 team hitting percentage - with just one attack error - to close out a 25-21 decision. After nearly identical scores in the opening two frames, the Panthers found themselves tied up with Western Oregon, but set three was captured by the Wolves after a 25-21 finish.

The Panthers put together a three point run to knot the game at 16-all in the third, but an overturned call kept the Wolves in command. After two straight points from the visitors, Head Coach Danielle MacKnight was forced to call a timeout. The Wolves closed out the frame with back-to-back service aces, resulting in a 2-1 lead in the match.

It took extra points in the fourth, but the Brown and Gold held Western Oregon to a negative hitting percentage, sealing the deal and forcing a fifth set with a 26-24 victory. The Panthers came from behind, finding themselves down 19-21, but rattled off five straight to lead 23-21. Samantha Meehan recorded two kills for Adelphi and coupled those with a miscue from the visiting attack to enter their third fifth set match of the season.

With Valsted at the serving line, Adelphi won the opening five points of the deciding set and managed to win six of the ensuing eight points to not only force the switch of sides, but also lead 11-3. Four of the next five points went to the Wolves as they got as close as three, but Meehan found the floor twice to cap the victory at 15-11.

The Wolves saw four different players in double-digit kills, but committed 35 errors compared to Adelphi's 19. The east coast team also held an advantage in blocks, with 11 as Western Oregon only totaled five.

The Panthers return to action on Friday when they take on Colorado Christian and host school St. Martin's University at 3:00 and 7:00 p.m., respectively.
